Osho Tantra
The great Indian Mystic and Tantric Master, Osho was born Chandra Mohan Jain, in British-India Bhopal; now modern day Madhya Pradesh. He was also known as Acharya Rajneesh or Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. He had great influence over the East and West with his open minded approach to sex, his emphasis on mindfulness and meditation, and his public disdain of the orthodoxy of Hindu religion. All of which made him increasingly unpopular in his native country and due to his open minded approach to sex, he came to be known as a ‘sex guru’.
Osho Neo Tantra is perhaps one of the most refined forms of Tantra, with clearly defined guidelines to achieve spiritual ascendancy with your partner through Osho’s understanding of Love Making or Sex, and with yourself through other self-meditation techniques along with other Tantric rituals.
Osho’s Neo Tantra is probably the big bang theory of Tantra, as its resultant consequence was the formation of a tantric universe, dominant almost everywhere, leaving its mark on intellectual and religious minds alike, whether they approved of it or not. This enlightened mystic led a colourful life, and his teachings are immortal and can be used effectively to this day.
Osho Tantra emphasised on the acceptance of sex as a beautiful occurrence, not something to feel ashamed about. It sought to replace the conditioning that sex is defiling with increased awareness of the consciousness, as it was a barrier to the same. Osho Tantra impressed upon its followers the ritual of meditating both, before and after sexual intercourse, to give a heightened sexual experience. To treat your partner’s body as a shrine instead of giving in to your lust and desire, another pre-requisite was to assort a separate room, cleansed and banished, for love making purposes only. It is to let the Divine Shiva and Shakti in you feel the holy union.
Osho Tantra is not only spiritual in nature, but also has religious afflictions. Osho Tantra underlined the importance of mindfulness through meditation. In his Ten Commandments, Osho has professed to not search because what is there will be there. One must actually stop and see and observe. Osho Tantra always focused on meditation as a route to any kind of spiritual awareness or growth. Osho gave more than a Five Hundred techniques of meditation. Physical activity, breathing exercises, sitting in silence and other unconventional methods were employed by Osho Tantra to make meditation more appealing to the public. These techniques shattered the image of meditation as only practiced by hermits or saints.
The most famous of Osho’s active meditation techniques are the Osho Dynamic Meditation,Osho Nadabrahma Meditation and Osho Kundalini Meditation.
Osho’s Dynamic Meditation is the most popular, unconventional and unorthodox type of meditation. It is intense, fast-paced and exhausting. It can be done in 5 stages. The first stage is breathing, the second stage is catharsis and the third stage is chanting of the mantra ‘Hoo!’ These are each for 10 minutes. The fourth stage is freeze and the fifth stage is Gratitude Dance. These are for 15 minutes each.
Osho, an Enlighted Master and a charismatic leader and innovative public speaker preached and strongly advocated against sexual repression and encouraged sexual acceptance in societies where it was considered taboo and used meditation as a tool to satisfy ‘the ego and the mind’ of the same. Pre-conditioning of the past does not allow individuals to live fully in the present and it is what Osho Tantra aimed at changing. To conduct a thorough ritual cleansing of oneself to better facilitate spiritual mindfulness, sexual enlightenment and to become whole, were the goals of Osho Tantra.
Osho Talks on Tantra are the foundation of Neo Tantra.
In the golden retro ages of 70s, 80s and 90s, Osho started to speak about different kinds of Tantra traditions and Tantric masters like the Shiva, Tilopa, Naropa & Saraha. Osho Tantra talks are compiled in the following books:
