The Rise Of Tantra- What’s The Truth Behind?

Much has been discussed about tantra among the westerners these days., but what is it?  Is it the practices of this spiritual current that a body with energy and the transcendent?

Tantra is a mystical way of life that encompasses human behavior in all areas, including sex. The word tantra, of Sanskrit origin, can be defined as “the continuous interweaving action.”

What is the Primary Concept of Tantra?

Tantra says that the individual can reintegrate with his creative source, putting into practice a series of principles that activate his energy, allowing him to connect with the whole universe or life.

There is no end; there is no objective in the act beyond living in the moment, in the here and now. This increases your body awareness and establishes a spiritual communion between the couple, where each one is revered as the source of power.

Brief History of Tantra

According to the ancient scriptures, it was lord Buddha himself who transmitted the principles of Tantra. He delivered it to King Indrabuthi. The king wanted to know about “dharma” but was not willing to leave his place and his queens as well. Buddha convinced the king about his outstanding qualities, he decided to teach him ‘Guhyasamaja’ Tantra.

The techniques went practically in secret from ’Guru’ to ‘Sishya’, from the heart to heart, from mouth to mouth and from gesture to gesture. The techniques came to light around 500 years back.

These came from all the social strata of India. A Mahamudra master brought it back to Tibet. The Sakya lineage began bringing masters from India, while the Gelug, the lineage of the Dalai Lama had its origin in Tibet.

The Vajrayana eventually spread to Central Asia, Mongolia, China, and Japan. It was practiced by the kings, school children, monks, workers, and prostitutes as well. They all shared a path of enlightenment.

In an evocative story, a man in charge of breaking rocks with a mace was dissatisfied with his work. He stopped a passing yogi and seeks help. The yogi taught him how to penetrate the rocks with the mace of his mind and. With that lesson, he obtained his illumination.

Sexuality and Tantra

In tantra, sex occupies a prominent place, has a sacred connotation and practices. Different exercises are developed to enhance sexual energy in the individual and the couple.

Sexuality as meditation

Tantra seeks to activate your energy points with meditation exercises that allow you to sensitize the body, calm the mind, calm the emotions and get in touch with the divine, a high state of consciousness. Different from Tantra

In the Western world, a literal interpretation of some texts was made, especially of Hindu tantrism and gave way to the massive idea that the rites of tantra include various sexual practices. They are done through exercises that seek to awaken the kundalini energy through sacred coitus or ‘maithuna’ (Sanskrit term meaning ‘sexual act’) This literal interpretation of tantra is known as neotantra.

A frequent conception of the Neotantra is to see it as the “Western Tantra”, developed from the twentieth century and related in part to the New Age.

  • Tantra (in Sanskrit: तन्त्र ‘weaving’, in the sense of continuity) or tantrism is any of the various esoteric traditions based on the religions of India. It exists in Hindu, Buddhist, Jainas and Bonpo variants. Tantra in its various forms exists in countries such as Burma, Bhutan, Cambodia, Korea, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Tibet.
  • According to some sources, this doctrine is based on a set of writings called Tantra. It appeared approximately in the sixth century BC from the hand of Siddharta Gautama (Lord Buddha).
  • Tantra is one of the three most important schools of contemporary Hinduism (the other two are Shivaism and Vaishnavism) and the main one within Tibetan Buddhism.
  • According to the ancient metaphoric scripts, the creative force is expressed in the human being through sexuality and the integration of male and female attitudes in each person. There are also meditation techniques through the sexual act.
  • It is also known as “the fast track”since a tantra practitioner learns to speak, feel and conduct himself as if he were Buddha, who attained enlightenment. This approach is radically different from the rest of the paths of yoga.
  • The texts that collect the teachings of tantra are written in a symbolic code, in the form of poems. It makes it difficult to understand them without proper help. They are usually written as a dialogue in which the god Shivá answers the questions of his wife Devī Shakti in the roles of teacher and disciple.
  • The word tantra, of Sanskrit origin, has several meanings: ‘loom, weaving, warp, the essential part, the characteristic feature, framework, doctrine, rule” and more. However, there is another way to translate it… tantra could derive from the verbal root tan (‘extend’). Thus, tantra would mean ‘the doctrine through which some types of teaching are extended or developed’ or ‘the continuous interweaving action’.
  • The goal of tantra is the reintegration of the individual into pure consciousness (which would be Śivá, the source). To achieve this objective, it is necessary to travelin the opposite direction through the path of manifestation. Moreover,‘Śakti’, the energy, is the vehicle through which individual consciousness unites with pure consciousness or divinity. The end of the way back is known as the awakening, a state of “superconsciousness.”
  • Tantra is a special manifestation of the sensibility, art, and religion of India. It is a cult of ecstasy, focused on a vision of cosmic sexuality. Towards that vision, lifestyles, rituals, magic, myth, philosophy, emotional signs and symbols converge. The basic texts by which this is expressed are called Tantras. Tantra also includes images and ideas that come from the oldest layers of the Indian religion, many of them from the Aiyan Veda and the Upanishads.
  • Today we know Tantra by handwritten texts written in Sanskrit or vernacular languages. Only a few of those that survive have been published. They seem to have been composed in India, in different periods and places, throughencyclopedias of philosophy and tantric ritual, they have been copied and augmented many times.
  • These forces, duly channeled, can give us an unprecedented source of energy, bringing benefits both to society and to the individual. To collaborate with our physical bodies, it must be cultivated with determination. Tantra is not a belief or a faith, but a way of living and acting. The practitioner must live a controlled life because he knows that only repetition, wholeheartedly and incessantly, of authentic acts, both physical and mental, can change his body and his consciousness. Getting along with yourself is the only platform from which you can build the altar of Sadhana (hard practice).

Tantra Is A Roof Without A House

Tantric practice or isolated Vajrayana is an excellent practice of gymnastics, body-mind discipline and even a harmonious and spiritual way of understanding and practicing love. As a path of perfection, within Buddhism, you need two basic prerequisites: the Hinayana and the Mahayana. In the construction of the temple,  the Hinayana are counted as the bases, the Mahayana is the walls and the Vajrayana is the roof.  So, to practice only Vajrayana is to try to build a temple without bases and walls. Hinayana also called a small vehicle, introduces the notion of the individual’s salvation, while the Mahayana or large vehicle penetrates the concept of being social and compassionate. It makes us learn to distinguish between ourselves and others.

For many, Buddhism begins and ends in the Hinayana while for others it is only transcendent to practice the Mahayana, whose foundations are described in the Prajnamarita Sutra that says:

“The form is empty, the emptiness in the form”. Fromthere, it begins to describe the teachings of the Hinayana, including the Four Noble Truths of Buddha.

Precisely, when we separate the world into our own and that of others, we begin to apply names and qualities to everything we perceive. If we come to realize that nothing has an intrinsic permanence and a stable form, we come to perceive that the truth of the form is its emptiness. However, in turn, emptiness is the form because the world does not disappear into nil and form emerges from emptiness.

The Chakras

Each chakra is a worldview. It is known as darshan. It is a perspective that organizes our feelings, thoughts, and values ​​to relate to the world and act in it.

The element associated with the second chakra is water. Consider the qualities of water. Water flows and moves freely, but does not run up the hills. Due to the force of gravity, it seeks the lowest point. Sensations are simply like water. Under the pressure of desire, they seek a situation of empathy between opposites, a common level at which similar feelings can be satisfied.

Like feelings,Water has no specific form. Water is much more mobile than the earth, but, through constant repetition, water can give the earth a new shape. Feelings can shape habits, but water is not like air, so there is a limit to the speed at which water can move and the speed at which you can move into the water.

If you have ever thrown yourself off a very high trampoline and have fallen on your belly, the water, which has a mobile nature, must have seemed like a solid wall for a moment. People who acquire strong functionalism of the second chakra and who have opened up to the world of feelings can move at the speed dictated by those feelings. If they don’t feel like ready to move, even under external pressure, they won’t. If they consider that they are ready to move, even if the external conditions are not favorable, they will.

Shakti, the Feminine Energy.

In the framework of Hinduism, the Sanskrit term śakti designates the energy or active power of a deva (male god), personified as his wife.

In its origin, every feminine divinity of Hinduism has been called Devī and has been associated with fertility. Each devī and her potency has been understood as śakti. In this way, each śakti is understood as an aspect of the Great Goddess (Mahamaya, Durgā or Kali). It is then assumed that each śakti is complementary to  Devas.

  • effectiveness (of a remedy)
  • power or meaning of a word (according to the Nyāya grammar: padasya padārthe sambandhah: ‘the relationship between a word and its meaning’)
  • the power of a case: the idea represented by an example
  • the power or force, or the most effective word of a sacred text or a magic formula
  • the creative power of imagination of a poet ‘
  • According to Rig Veda:

help, assistance, gift, offeringor spear, sting, arrow, javelin, stinger, halberd, puja, antler and more.

The Sakta Creed

The śakta creed is one of the religious groups of Hinduism. It is guided by the tantric texts. The śāktas worship Śakti in some of its many forms, and also as a vulva (both symbolically and really).


According to Vāyu Purāna (one of the six Purānas praising Śiva), Rudra’s feminine nature was divided into two halves: one white, of a docile nature (such as Lakshmī, Sáraswatī, Gaurī, Umā) and another site or black, wild nature (Durgā, Kāli).

Different Notions Of Tantra

For Tantra, life is a continuous process that involve space and time. The universe is associated with consciousness and Energy. Tantra considers that each cell is a living being, conscious of itself, endowed with psyche, emotions, memory, or in other words, a lucid consciousness. Thus, consciousness is a property of the whole body.  This is because “everything that is here is everywhere.” Consciousness is a dimension of the Universe.

For Tantra, the Universe is real and the practitioner of Tantra is integrated into it to perceive its profound reality.
